Entering the major Week 5 showdown between the Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers, there's been a lot of talk about how one quarterback can help America's Team get the win. And I'm not talking about Dak Prescott.
Instead, it's Trey Lance who is on the minds of many. A former member of the 49ers, fans and media alike have suggested Lance's inside knowledge can benefit the Cowboys on Sunday. Perhaps he's got a handful of secrets that can make a difference during the game.
Lance inadvertently shot down any notion that that is in fact an advantage here.
"I’m doing everything I can to help, but at the same time, these guys have done a lot of prep on the Niners with those big games the last two years, so they know a lot about the offense," Lance told reporters on Thursday. "I’m here now, so I’m doing everything I can to try to help.”
Lance is exactly right. Just think about the prep work that goes into a playoff game. There are no secrets on film. Whatever insight Lance can provide from his knowledge of Kyle Shanahan's team will pale in comparison to the research the Cowboys have already done in the first place.
Even more so when Dallas has been owned by San Francisco in the last couple of years. Other than divisional opponents, I would bet good money the 49ers are the team the Cowboys have been thinking about the entire offseason. Dak Prescott even said he thinks about that loss "every fu-, every day."
There's no hidden weakness that Lance can point to blow up the Death Star that is the 49ers offense (or defense, for that matter). And if there happens to be one, the Cowboys probably already have the blueprint.
As for what he can bring to the table this (and any other) week, the former third-overall pick kept it real.
"That’s kind of the life of a backup quarterback in this league," Lance said. "I just do everything I can in the meeting room and after practice to do what I can to make up for those reps."
