If losing a wide receiver wasn't enough, Dave Canales revealed Monday that safety Sam Franklin Jr. will miss a portion of the season after suffering a broken foot

The injury happened Saturday during an early morning practice. The loss of Franklin will deal a significant blow to the Carolina Panthers' special teams unit and safety position depth.

"You can't replace Sam Franklin," Canales said. "But this is a great opportunity for guys to step up."

Canales hinted at utilizing some of the players at the inside linebacker position to fill the special teams hole left by Franklin's injury.

Canales also hinted that Franklin would be ready to return at some point this season. Still, the Panthers' head coach did admit the loss of the special teams contributor will be a difficult mountain for Carolina to climb

"It's a huge hit for us," Canales said. "He's a fantastic spirited guy. A leader of the special teams unit. Sam will come back to us at the right time."

Regarding whether Franklin will remain on the 90-man roster, Canales didn't answer, stating the front office is dealing with that question in real time.

"He'll be able to come back to us and help us at some point," Canales said.
