The Los Angeles Chargers may have one of the most underrated safety duos in the entire NFL. Alohi Gilman and Derwin James have different skillsets that blend together quite well. The football world may learn more about that tandem in 2024.
Alohi Gilman was the best defender in the 1st quarter in the NFL in 2023
The young safety was surprisingly impressive a season ago. He was one of the highest graded safeties in the NFL, according to Pro Football Focus. He received a 86.1 overall PFF grade in 2023, a massive jump from his 54.3 grade in 2022.
That sort of development is the definition of breaking out in the NFL.
You don't see that type of growth often, and he should be solid once again in a new defensive scheme in 2024. Expect a plethora of players on the Chargers defense to take a step forward with last year's coaching staff out of the building.
Gilman made sure to make his grade known on social media, too. His post on Twitter/X was comical.
Last season, Gilman totaled 56 solo tackles and two interceptions. He allowed 22 receptions on 34 targets and forced three fumbles.
Gilman remains one of the most under-the-radar secondary players in the entire NFL. If he puts together another season like he did last year, expect a lot more conversation around his name entering 2025.
I actually believe that the Chargers entire secondary may shock folks this year. It's talented, and it has the ceiling to be one of the best back-end units in the AFC, as a whole. Gilman will be an important piece of that if they reach that sort of level.
No one dominates early in the game quite like the young Chargers safety.
Los Angeles Chargers WR Ladd McConkey is already connecting with Justin Herbert at OTAs
The Los Angeles Chargers got Herbert the perfect weapon.
