One major position for the Los Angeles Chargers has seen a complete makeover for 2024. Can you guess it? Take a moment.
If you said running back, you are correct. Arguably, the top three running backs for Los Angeles this year will all be new faces. Gus Edwards and J.K. Dobbins were both free agency additions. They have history with Jim Harbaugh's new offensive staff.
Kimani Vidal is a rookie who has impressed the staff during OTAs and practice so far. He may play a bigger role than you'd expect as a rookie this season. Only time will tell.
Chargers writer Daniel Popper (The Athletic) listed how he thinks the RB depth chart currently stands in a recent article.
Projected Chargers 2024 running back depth chart
- Gus Edwards
- J.K. Dobbins
- Kimani Vidal
- Isaiah Spiller
- Elijah Dotson
- Jaret Patterson
I see Edwards as the clear lead back. The secondary touches are open for competition, though if Dobbins is healthy, I think he wins that job. Edwards was nursing an injury in the spring, but according to Harbaugh, he should be ready for camp. — Daniel Popper
It's notable that Popper sees Edwards as the clear top option.
Many thought Dobbins may take that job if he gets healthy. He seemingly is more so battling for the backup job in LA.
Vidal is his greatest competitor for RB2. The rookie is an impressive receiver out of the backfield and possesses some explosiveness that Dobbins may not possess after multiple knee surgeries over the course of his college and pro career.
As for Dotson and Patterson, they will probably battle for nods on the practice squad or a special teams role – at the most.
We will see how the depth chart shakes out after the preseason, but this projection from Popper is the most accurate look that Chargers fans will probably get until then.
Odd stat shows Chargers’ breakout player is on top of the world when the game begins
He’s a great starter.
