The summer college football recruiting cycle is here in all of its chaotic glory. Top tier recruits are making their most critical official visits all throughout the months of May and June, knowing their final decisions are just around the corner.
Five star offensive lineman Josh Petty from Fellowship Christian in Roswell, GA has already begun his busy month of official visits. And amid those summer visits he's already decided to offer some clarity for fans hoping their favorite college football team lands him.
According to his conversations this week with Chad Simmons of On3 it's down to Tennessee, Ohio State, Florida State, Stanford, and Georgia Tech. He's had over 40 schools vying for his services over the last few years. So what makes this elite offensive line prospect so special to garner such interest, and which school will likely land his services?
Josh Petty, OL Fellowship Christian
Petty is a unique offensive line recruit that brings a diverse skill set with ability to likely play any and every offensive line position at the next level. He's a state champion wrestler, a track and field star, and plays full-time on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball (along both lines). His flexibility, strength, and understanding of proper leverage makes him a near impossible man to move and he's not even played his senior year yet.
He likely starts off his career wherever he lands on the inside of the offensive line until he builds out his frame a bit more, but this five star talent could be a first round pick at any offensive line spot. Petty could even convert to full-time defensive line and play tackle there if he wanted to with his aggressive hands.
Likely Landing Spot for Petty
Petty is fresh off of his visit to Stanford, and has stressed throughout his recruitment that academics are important him. Even when visiting with schools who aren't in his top five, he's made note when that's stood out (most notably at Notre Dame in April). Stanford hasn't been a heavy presence throughout his recruitment, and they're still likely a long shot, but it's intriguing that the Cardinal made his top five.
Georgia Tech is also hosting him here soon too. They have in-state and academic legs up. He's also visited them more than any other school, but that's likely due to the easy trip there for him. The most likely players for his services all have visits with him coming up in the next three consecutive weekends.
The Tennessee Vols have him visiting June 7th, Ohio State the week after, and then Florida State on the weekend of the 21st. Josh Heupel and his scheme often breed questions for offensive lineman since the splits and spacing aren't exactly typical, but Petty's versatility, speed, bend, and strength would suit the Vols perfectly. They've also recently seen their offensive lineman have great success at the NFL level (like Darnell Wright). They're firmly in the mix.
Ohio State has several mid-tier pedigree prospects they're looking at for offensive lineman in the 2025 class, but Petty would be a game-changer. Ryan Day and the Buckeyes haven't been a mainstay throughout his recruitment, but are clearly coming on strong late realizing they absolutely need someone like Petty. A desperate late push might pull it off.
And last, but not least is Florida State. Petty loves the Seminoles' offensive coordinator, Alex Atkins. He's said as much on multiple occasions and had a great visit with Florida State in March. The most recent track record of elite level on-field success, development, and relationships there might have them leading, but it's still a tight battle. We'll keep a close eye on him throughout the next few weeks amid his final summer visits.
