When the Cleveland Browns suit up in 2024 for their season, quarterback Deshaun Watson already knows who the team’s biggest game will be.
On a recent episode of QB Unplugged with Deshaun Watson and Quincy Avery, Watson broke down who the biggest matchup for the Browns always is and it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise.
"Cleveland [and] Pittsburgh for sure,” Watson said "It’s even bigger than Cincinnati. It’s not Baltimore. Baltimore is a big game, for sure. It’s up there but it ain’t as real as Pittsburgh."
Every time the Browns and Steelers go at it as of late it is a battle. Look no further than the second matchup last year in Week 11 when the Browns won 13-10 over the Steelers. It was the first game after Cleveland had announced that Watson would miss the season and ended up being Dorian Thompson-Robinson’s first career win. A 13-10 ball game is about as AFC North as it gets.
The first matchup was a 26-22 win for the Steelers in Week 2 of the 2023 season. That was the game that the Browns lost Nick Chubb for the season to a gruesome knee injury just before halftime. The injury visibly sucked the wind out of Cleveland in that game and they failed to fully recover.
It is an interesting layout for the Browns in 2024 that will have them playing the Steelers twice in three weeks. Pittsburgh will come to Cleveland for Thursday Night Football in Week 12, and then Cleveland will travel there in Week 14. A date with the Denver Broncos in Denver is sandwiched between the matchups with the Steelers for Cleveland.
Watson did not take long to find out that the Steelers are the biggest game for the Browns each year on the schedule. Even all of the years that Ben Roethlisberger dominated the Browns, it was still seen as a rivalry.
Pittsburgh is going to be improved in 2024 with what figures to be Russell Wilson under center. The most important thing for Watson is to stay healthy and be on the field for both matchups.
Pro Bowl playmaker may be among the veterans not on the Cleveland Browns roster at this point next offseason
We’ll see if they all stick around.
