The Houston Texans had a successful offseason, with two of their members, C.J. Stroud and Will Anderson, winning the Rookie of the Year awards from their respective sides of the ball. This is a testament to the team's commitment to nurturing young talent. But now we know there is one other award winner on the roster, adding to the team's list of accolades.

After a season filled with challenges and triumphs, wide receiver John Metchie III emerged as a true champion, winning the prestigious PFWA 2024 George Halas Award, a testament to his unwavering determination and resilience.

The George Halas Award, one of the two oldest awards presented by the PFWA, is a highly esteemed recognition in the NFL. It is given to an individual who has demonstrated exceptional resilience and determination in the face of adversity.

The award is named after George Halas, a charter member (1963) of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, who was associated with the Chicago Bears and NFL from their inception in 1920 until he died in 1983 as an owner, manager, player, and promoter. Halas won 324 games and six NFL titles in 40 seasons as a coach. The Bill Nunn Jr. Award, the other oldest award, is presented to a reporter who has made a long and distinguished contribution to pro football through coverage.

Metchie returned to play in the 2023 season after missing the entire 2022 season with acute promyelocytic leukemia. Metchie was a huge contributor last season on one of the best offenses in the league. Last year, Damar Hamlin won the award. The last Houston Texans player to win the award was David Quessenberry in 2018.

Metchie is certainly deserving.
