Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce got Outta The House over the weekend, checking out Game 3 of the Western Conference Finals between the Dallas Mavericks and the Minnesota Timberwolves. He joined his fellow Chiefs teammates Patrick Mahomes and Marquise 'Hollywood' Brown in some courtside seats for the game.
Kelce, however, didn't get the warmest of welcomes from the crowd in Dallas, Texas. When they showed him on the Jumbotron in the arena the cheers were overpowered by some boos from the crowd.
Check it out:
Travis recapped the experience with his brother Jason Kelce on this week's "New Heights Show" podcast (you can watch the whole episode at the top of the page).
"You had an interesting reception on the Jumbotron," Jason said. "Cowboys fans were not too happy."
"Yeah, I got booed twice," Travis said, with a puzzled look on his face. "It's whatever, I get it. I get I'm not from Dallas."
"Why?" Jason questioned.
"I'm just kind of like an innocent bystander," Travis said. "I don't know. . . I don't know. Maybe they just don't like the Chiefs? I don't know."
The Chiefs' run of dominance has certainly turned the team into the villains of the NFL, but the fans' response to Patrick Mahomes tells you that's just not it here. Kelce thinks it might have simply been that he was startled by appearing on the Jumbotron and hadn't prepared for it.
"If they were showing you, they had to be showing Pat (Mahomes), too, right?" Jason asked.
"Yeah, but it was like, you know they'll throw the name underneath and try to specify who they're showing," Travis said. "They showed me and I got caught off guard because I was trying to take a selfie with some people around me. Then Pat (Mahomes) kind of like taps me. I was like, 'What's up?' *looks up* 'Oh, shit! I'm on the Jumbotron!' And I heard all of the boos and I'm just like, 'Oh, shit! I'm getting booed! Alright. Nice. Thanks. Nice to see you guys, Dallas. Appreciate the warm welcome.'"
Of course, Patrick Mahomes got a warm welcome from his home state of Texas.
"Then, they show Pat (Mahomes) and everybody is like, 'Yeah!!!!!'" Travis explained. "He's the hometown hero, man. He's the best football player in the world."
If it truly was Dallas Cowboys fans booing Kelce, he's got some news for them that they're going to want to hear.
"I grew up a huge Jason Witten appreciator," Travis said. "The Cowboys were always the 'Boys when they had Deion (Sanders) and Emmitt (Smith). Dude, I used to want to be a (Cowboy), man."
That comment sparked some pushback from Jason, who played for the Philadelphia Eagles for his entire NFL career.
"Dude, stop saying that," Jason said. "You never wanted to be a Cowboy. Why would you have wanted to be a Cowboy?"
Thankfully, Travis isn't a Cowboy. He's a Chief who enjoys watching some playoff basketball (and playoff hockey, he attended the Dallas Stars game, too).
