247Sports made a prediction for the Tennessee Vols this week that I think all college baseball fans will love.
They have Tennessee advancing out of the Knoxville regional (which includes Tennessee, Indiana, Southern Mississippi, and Northern Kentucky), which means they would host a Super Regional.
The winner of the Knoxville regional will face the winner of the Greenville regional (which is hosted by ECU).
And 247Sports has Wake Forest winning the Greenville regional.
Cue the drama.
A matchup between Tennessee and Wake Forest in a Super Regional is a dream come true for college baseball fans (and broadcasters). There's plenty of built-in storylines between the two programs — specifically because of Wake Forest RHP Chase Burns, who transferred to Wake Forest from Tennessee this past offseason.
Burns is expected to be a top five selection in the 2024 MLB Draft later this summer. And a matchup between Tennessee and Wake Forest in a Super Regional will only serve to increase the hype surrounding Burns.
Of course, both the Vols and the Demon Deacons have to take care of business first. Wake Forest has had a down year (compared to preseason expectations), but they still have plenty of talent on their roster (Wake Forest could have three first round picks in this year's draft). Tennessee, meanwhile, looks like a juggernaut and they get to play their regional at home, where they're awfully tough to beat.
Games, though, aren't played on paper. We've seen plenty of scenarios in college sports not work out as expected. Hopefully for college baseball fans, this is one of the scenarios that works out as expected. It would be a shame to get robbed of a Chase Burns vs Tennessee storyline.
ESPN makes strong statement about Wake Forest RHP Chase Burns that will have Vols fans wishing he was still in Knoxville
Tennessee could definitely use him in postseason play….every program could
