With the 2024 NFL Draft quickly approaching, Mel Kiper Jr. put together a two-round mock draft for ESPN

Much has been made of the Los Angeles Rams' first-round pick No. 19. Kiper has the Rams selecting outside linebacker Laiatu Latu. But that isn't an as interesting selection.

Where things get good is in Kiper's prediction for what the Rams do in the second round, which lands Los Angeles Michael Penix Jr., a superstar who put Washington on his back during the 2023 season.

How the Rams land Michael Penix Jr.

To land the superstar, Kiper projected the Rams to trade three picks (No. 52, 83 and 196) to the Los Angeles Chargers for the right to select Penix at No. 37.

The Rams are a perfect quarterback destination. Matthew Stafford is getting older. Jimmy Garoppolo is only signed to a one-year deal and Stetson Bennett – a fourth-round pick last year – spent his entire rookie season on the reserve/non-football illness list.

The Rams need the Stafford successor and Penix can be exactly that. In his senior season in Washington, Penix threw for 4,903 yards and 36 touchdowns. With the Rams, he will have the ability to sit for a season or two before being thrust into playing. It could be a match made in heaven.
