How do you know you're making headway in the competition for starting QB on your team?

Your hometown ball club lets you throw out the first pitch of course.

Turns out, the Pirates just did that for Pittsburgh Steelers QB Russell Wilson:

Russell Wilson To Throw First Pitch at Pirates vs. Red Sox

With the Pittsburgh Steelers starting their off-season workouts last Monday, Wilson is in town as the team prepares to open the season with their fourth different starting QB in as many years.

Unlike last year, however, Wilson has some competition between him and Justin Fields.

Kenny Pickett was the clear-cut guy at this point last year and Mitchell Trubisky was the veteran with a young signal-caller on his heels the first year post Big Ben.

But Wilson is hoping to hold onto his starting job for a while longer than the aforementioned, even if he's on a one-year deal.

And while it will be his play on the field that ultimately determines that, befriending the fans and the city can't hurt.
