The Tennessee Vols did right by a UT legend this week upon his return to Rocky Top.
Former Vols quarterback Tee Martin, who helped deliver a national championship to Knoxville 25 years ago, was back at Tennessee on Wednesday for UT's Pro Day.
Martin, who is currently the quarterbacks coach for the Baltimore Ravens, was seen chatting up Vols head coach Josh Heupel and visiting with former UT quarterback Joe Milton during Tennessee's Pro Day.
Heupel and Vols athletic director Danny White both recognized Martin's visit to Tennessee with posts on social media.
It was nice to see Martin receive a hero's welcome from Tennessee — especially considering he had a bit of an unceremonious exit from the program in early 2021.
After serving as an assistant coach under Jeremy Pruitt for two seasons, Martin was caught in a state of limbo when Pruitt and several members of his staff were fired in early 2021. That was despite the fact that Phillip Fulmer, Tennessee's athletic director at the time and Martin's head coach in college, promised the former Vols quarterback a two-year extension with the program.
Martin, who was never implicated in the recruiting scandal that cost Pruitt his job (Martin was never one of "Pruitt's guys"), eventually landed the job with the Ravens.
And White, according to an interview with Martin in 2021, made sure to work things out with Martin after taking over for Fulmer as Tennessee's athletic director.
"I had an opportunity to go to the National Football League and take this job, and Tennessee and Danny White, we’re working things out currently," said Martin to The Athletic in early 2021. "They’re doing good by me and that’s all I can ask. So we’re going to leave it at that."
It's nice to see that all of those issues are behind Martin and Tennessee. And it's even better to see that his visit to UT this week was celebrated the way it should be.
