New Lady Vols head coach Kim Caldwell joined 104.5 The Zone's The Buck Reising Show on Friday and she had some thoughts about the big expectations she'll face in Knoxville.
Caldwell was asked by 104.5 The Zone's Lucas Panzica about what it's like to walk by the statue of legendary former Lady Vols head coach Pat Summitt.
The new Lady Vols head coach acknowledged that it gives her chills to walk by the statue, before pointing out that she embraces the high expectations that come along with the job.
"I mean, it absolutely gives you chills and it humbles you," said Caldwell. "It puts a little pressure on you, but it really just is an amazing environment to be in. And I cannot believe that I get to coach here. And a lot of people said 'I can't believe you're taking that job, you have to be great, you have to be great, the fan base, they're hungry'. Why wouldn't you want that? Why would you want to play in front of a fan base that doesn't care? Why would you want to go to a school that doesn't have high expectations and they want you to finish fifth and that's a good year for them?
"I mean, I've had a lot of job opportunities, and obviously none this big, but you want to go somewhere where they care about women's basketball. And you walk down the hallway here and it is apparent that they do and I think it's phenomenal."
It's obvious that Caldwell understands what she's stepping into by taking this job. She understands that the expectation is to compete for national championships at Tennessee. And she embraces that.
It's too early to know how things will turn out for Caldwell at Tennessee, but it certainly seems like she has the right energy and the right mindset to thrive on Rocky Top.
