When the Philadelphia Eagles invested big money into a running back during NFL free agency and signed Saquon Barkley to a three-year, $37.75 million deal, they surprised many, including veteran offensive lineman Lane Johnson.
“Once you see him, you’ll never forget, just [a] physically imposing guy,” Johnson said during an appearance on NFL Network this week. “I think he walks around 230 [pounds].
"He’s ultra competitive. When you see what he can do at the running back position and we can flex him out at receiver, he can go. It’s unbelievable. I never thought that he would be playing for us, but here it is. I know that he’s excited. We’re definitely excited up front. I think he’s poised for a big, big year.”
Barkley rushed for 962 yards and six touchdowns while also hauling in 41 passes for 280 yards last season with the New York Giants.
In 2024, Barkley is widely projected to have another breakout year.
In fact, NFL Network's Adam Rank projects Barkley will log his best season yet, even better than his rookie 2018 season when he recorded 1,307 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns, earning his first Pro Bowl nod and Offensive Rookie of the Year.
That's a lot of pressure for Barkley to live up to, but it's not going to be impossible behind a durable offensive line that features Johnson and four other Eagles studs.
