The Kansas City Chiefs got some positive news on Friday regarding DE BJ Thompson, who suffered a medical emergency during a special teams meeting at team facilities on Thursday.
As of last night, Thompson was still unconscious, but his status has now changed. According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero via Thompson's agent, Chris Turnage, the 25-year-old defender is now awake and responsive at the hospital. This comes just a day after Thompson suffered a seizure, which sent him into cardiac arrest.
The Chiefs' medical and training staff were able to act quickly after Thompson suffered his seizure. They administered life-saving aid to Thompson as they waited for medical personnel and an ambulance to arrive.
Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo offered the following comments at a charity softball game hosted by Justin Reid and Trey Smith on Thursday night.
“Let me say this before I say anything, I’m thinking about BJ right now,” Spags said. “It was scary. I think the guys were a little bit scared, I know I was. But a lot of praying and [head athletic trainer] Rick [Burkholder] and his staff did a terrific job.
“But everybody you know, to a man to a person to a woman, because we have some female trainers, they were terrific, they did a great job. So we’ll keep our fingers crossed. I’ll let Andy handle the rest of that.”
We'll get comments from Andy Reid shortly, with the team's final OTAs practice expected to conclude in about 30 minutes.
Pelissero reports that Thompson's prognosis is good, but there is still no telling how quickly the second-year defensive lineman will be able to make his return to the practice field. Ultimately, that doesn't matter. What matters right now is that Thompson is awake and in good health.
