The Detroit Lions made two significant extensions this offseason when they made Amon-Ra St. Brown and Penei Sewell the highest paid players at their respective positions. Still, there’s one extension that everyone is waiting on and it hasn’t happened yet. That’s Jared Goff
Coming into the offseason, this was expected to be the biggest thing the Lions did this offseason After comments from Goff's agent Ryan Tollner, it seemed like this would be the first thing the Lions would take care of. Here we sit at the beginning of May and it's not happened yet.
Lions GM Brad Holmes talked with 97.1 The Ticket on Thursday morning and said the two sides are still working together on a deal.
“It’s important, it’s a high priority for us.” Holmes said. “Both sides are working really, really hard. These things just take time.”
People might think this is sign that the two parties are having trouble coming to an agreement on terms. The most popular theory is that Goff wants a long term deal and the Lions want a short term deal that’s likely not what’s happening here. The big reason this extension hasn't happened yet is very simple.
What’s happening is that, like Holmes said, these things take time. Goff is expected to get a major extension from the Lions that would put him in the $200 million range and make him one of the highest paid quarterbacks in the league. Take a look at the dates of the most recent major extensions and you'll see the pattern shows that this is something that rarely gets done fast.
- Joe Burrow: September 7th, 2023
- Justin Herbet: July 25th, 2023
- Lamar Jackson: April 27th, 2023
- Jalen Hurts: April 17th, 2023
- Russell Wilson: September 1st, 2022
- Kyler Murray: July 21st, 2022
- Deshaun Watson: March 18th, 2022
- Josh Allen: August 6th, 2021
- Patrick Mahomes, July 6, 2020
That's just stuff in the $200 million range. Goff's extension with the Ram's happened in September, Stafford's huge extension with the Lions happened at the end of August. Aaron Rodgers big extension with the Packers also happened at the end of August, Deshaun Watson's extension with the Texans happened in September.
This isn't just a small little thing for the Lions and Goff. This is a huge deal for both sides and they both want to get it right. The good news is that Brad Holmes has faith the Lions are going to get the deal done.
“In a perfect world, we would’ve had all three of them done. Bang, bang, bang,” Holmes said. “But these things just kind of take a while, especially with the quarterback market, but I do have faith that it’s gonna get done.”
NFL draft analyst says Lions’ Terrion Arnold could have a rookie year similar to one of the best cornerbacks in the game
You just can't talk about it enough. The Detroit Lions scored big in the 2024 NFL Draft when they were able to get Terrion Arnold. This is a player that was slated to be a top 15 pick and nearly went 13th to the Raiders. Yet he fell to 24 and the Lions were able […]
