The Indianapolis Colts and general manager Chris Ballard have done it again. For the third time in the last five years they have selected a wide receiver prospect way later than they should have gone in the NFL Draft. Ballard and the Colts used their second round pick to select Adonai Mitchell, WR Texas.
Mitchell now joins Michael Pittman Jr. and Josh Downs as absolutely obvious draft day steals. Pittman, selected at 34th overall has posted three straight seasons over 900 receiving yards for the Colts now as the leader through the air. Downs had an even more impressive rookie year than Pittman by racking up nearly 800 receiving yards through the air just last fall. Mitchell should give the Colts one of the best receiver trios in the league.
Adonai Mitchell, WR Texas
Mitchell began his career playing for the Georgia Bulldogs where he made his presence known almost immediately as a true freshman. He logged multiple catches in his first seven collegiate games in a row for Georgia, then scored a touchdown in both of their College Football Playoff games that year on the way to a national championship.
His 2022 season was a major disappointment as he struggled with health due to a high ankle sprain. However, he finished strong again, scoring touchdowns in both College Football Playoff games again for Georgia in their second consecutive national championship run.
After he transferred to Texas he stepped up in a more complete role, proving to be an even better wide receiver than before. He snagged 11 receiving touchdowns and 845 receiving yards as a junior last fall. And again, he found the end zone in Texas' College Football Playoff game against Washington. In the biggest moments Mitchell always stepped up in college to score the difference-making touchdown.
This spring he dominated the NFL Combine posting 99th percentile A to Z Sports Athletic Composite Score. After that it was thought he would be a first round pick. Betting markets and mock drafts consistently placed him inside round one. However, the Colts got a steal again, taking him at pick 52 overall.
Adonai Mitchell fit with the Colts
Adonai Mitchell should directly replace the horrific play of Alec Pierce who has been a major disappointment since entering the league. Mitchell is superior in literally every way. Size, speed, strength, contested catch ability, and more. Mitchell will likely line up almost exclusively at outside wide receiver pushing down the field as the team's primary vertical threat.
Mitchell should do a whole lot better than catch two touchdowns and 514 receiving yards (what Alec Pierce did last year) in an explosive roll for the Colts. This should give young quarterback Anthony Richardson a viable difference maker to target deep and win contested situations even when he misses.
