The 2024 NFL draft is practically a month away and the Kansas City Chiefs officially know the entire draft order.
The NFL released its compensatory selections, which paved the way for Friday's official draft pick release. The Chiefs now have seven total picks in 2024, but no picks in Round 6 of the draft.
The Chiefs traded a 2024 sixth-round pick to the Raiders for DT Neil Farrell Jr. ahead of the 2023 NFL season. They gained a 2024 fifth-round pick (No. 158) when the Dallas Cowboys acquired pick No. 178 in the 2023 NFL draft. They also did not lose their 2024 seventh-round pick (No. 250) in the Lonnie Johnson trade, which means that the conditions of that trade were not met. They were awarded a fifth-round compensatory pick (No. 173) for losing RT Andrew Wylie to the Washington Commanders.
Chiefs' official picks in the 2024 NFL Draft
- Round 1: No. 32 overall
- Round 2: No. 64 overall
- Round 3: No. 95 overall
- Round 4: No. 131 overall (Thanks 49ers)
- Round 5: No. 158 overall
- Round 5: No. 173 overall (compensatory)
- Round 7: No. ??? overall (L'Jarius Sneed trade)
What does it all mean?
It's a pleasant surprise that the Chiefs still have their Round 7 pick after the Lonnie Johnson trade. It would have been nice to get another compensatory pick, but the Mecole Hardman trade was paid off for Kansas City in Super Bowl LVIII. Should the Chiefs acquire more picks for L'Jarius Sneed in trade, they could have a ton of draft capital to move around and be selective with their choices in the draft. The most selections that Brett Veach has made in a single draft are 10 in 2022. On the flip side, the fewest he has made in a single draft are six (2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021).
