Jason Kelce went viral for running in Mike's Seafood Polar Bear 5K run/walk for autism awareness at the Jersey Shore last month.
Kelce joked on X/Twitter afterward saying, "ran" was a "generous verb" for what really went down.
That video came up again during this week's New Heights podcast episode where Jason revealed what really went down.
"So I tried running it… I had my Monarchs, not the best running shoes," Jason explained. "They're great lawn-mowing shoes, not a 5k shoe. We started off running, and I should've known. First of all, we were late, so it had already started.
'We snuck in and went, and as we're running, we're passing people and I'm like, 'okay we're doing pretty good here.' I should've known at this point, 'hey, we need to slow this pace down.' So we're running and Taylor says every 20 blocks is a mile, she just throws that out there. So I thought that was where we're at, and I thought, 'I'm cruising, I'm nailing this, I think I'm actually going to be able to do this.'"
Jason admitted he ended up having to walk a good chunk of the race.
"And then after we're off the promenade boardwalk, and onto the street, I think I'm well past a mile, and they have a line and it says '1 mile', and I'm just like, 'oh my god', and I know I've got to go three plus, and there's just no way this is happening. I’ve given everything I have to get to this point. And I made it just before halfway. I started walking, then just kept walking because I used up everything. And then ran the last 500 feet.”
Travis chimed in to ask him, "Where’s our mental toughness?"
"I was inducing mental toughness through that mile," Jason said. "It was hard.- I’m not built for this… I feel the same way with swimming. Like older people just have this ability to get in a gear where it’s actually slower than if you walked, but they can just maintain it. And I can’t maintain my run. – I got smoked by every old person. It was embarrassing, I’m not going to lie. Pickleball and 5k’s are not something I can compete with old people in.
"I think my time was 45 minutes”
Of course, Jason had to roast him.
“The fact that you just said that. Jesus, 45 minutes for three miles," Travis said. "You’re not passing Roxborough Elementary’s gym class.”
