Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes is already texting with Texas WR Xavier Worthy ahead of the 2024 NFL draft

Texas WR Xavier Worthy has been on a media blitz since his record-setting performance at the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine.

In a recent interview with USA TODAY's Tyler Dragon, Worthy spoke about the response since his blazing-fast 4.21s 40-yard dash. Not only did Worthy reveal that he heard from his idol, Philadelphia Eagles WR DeSean Jackson, but he also heard from someone he could wind up playing with at the next level.

"Worthy said his phone has been “buzzing” since he broke the combine 40 record. Hall of Fame linebacker Ray Lewis, DeSean Jackson, and three-time Super Bowl champion Patrick Mahomes were among the notable congratulatory texts he received." – USA TODAY's Tyler Dragon

Mahomes was certainly made aware of Worthy's 40-yard dash time almost immediately. His teammate and former Texas Longhorn Charles Omenihu alerted Mahomes to both Worthy and Adonai Mitchell's performances during the combine. The league also ribbed Mahomes with a Simulcam of his 40-yard dash and Worthy's 40-yard dash. Mahomes was left in the dust.

What's most notable about this is that Worthy is on a texting basis with one of the NFL's biggest stars. He already had a formal interview with the Chiefs at the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine, during which he had a funny interaction with Andy Reid. It's reasonable to expect the two might meet for a throwing session down in Texas at some point ahead of the 2024 NFL draft, just as other draft prospects did a season ago.

Kansas City Chiefs are Xavier Worthy's perfect NFL draft fit

You'll hear plenty of draft analysts chalk Worthy up as a fit for the Chiefs heading into April's draft. The mock drafts have already sent him to Kansas City with frequency at pick No. 32 after Worthy's record-setting combine performance and meteoric rise up draft boards.

The best part about it? Worthy also views himself as a fit for the back-to-back reigning Super Bowl champions. Maybe it's not so surprising that a young wide receiver would want to go to a team in the thick of the hunt for the Super Bowl every year, but he envisions himself playing a key part for Kansas City.

“In a perfect world, I definitely would want to go to the Chiefs,” Worthy told Dragon. “Just the way Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs improvise and use you. They had Tyreek Hill. The way they used him, I feel like that would be a perfect fit for me.”

I'm skeptical that Worthy could fill the Tyreek Hill role in this offense because they're different players with different skill sets and body types. That elite speed, however, is incredibly enticing as a way to bring explosive deep passing plays back to the offense.

While Worthy and the Chiefs could be an ideal pairing, 31 other teams will have to pass on him first unless Brett Veach can facilitate a trade-up in the first round. That's something that proved to be difficult for K.C. just a season ago. It could be even more difficult in a year when NIL impacted the quality of draft-eligible talent.
