The Kansas City Chiefs lost another free agent on Wednesday.
The Buffalo Bills announced that they had signed former Chiefs S Mike Edwards to a one-year deal after a successful visit on Tuesday. Edwards recently visited the Indianapolis Colts, but he was unable to agree to terms on a deal. He followed that visit up with Buffalo, one of the biggest AFC rivals for Kansas City. They didn't let him leave without a contract.
A former third-round draft pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers out of the University of Kentucky in 2019, Edwards only spent one season in Kansas City. He appeared in 17 regular season games with the Chiefs in 2023, including five games started. During that time frame, he amassed 51 total tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack, one interception, two fumble recoveries, including one returned 101 yards for a TD. He started all four games for Kansas City this postseason, recording 12 total tackles, an interception and two passes defended. Edwards is a two-time Super Bowl winner in Super Bowl LV with the Buccaneers and Super Bowl LVIII with the Chiefs.
Buffalo had a major need at the safety position after seemingly moving on from both Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer. Edwards is deserving of an opportunity to start for the Bills and could prove to be a sneakily good signing, especially when it comes to facing Kansas City in the postseason. He has the reputation as a ballhawk and you can never have too many of those on the defensive side of the ball.
