Now that cuts have been made across the NFL, all attention turns to waiver claims. Teams, including the Cleveland Browns, are looking for end-of-the-roster fits and practice squad pieces.
Players can begin signing on practice squads today and those should filter in throughout the day. You’ll be able to follow along for that here.
When it comes to who the Browns should go out and get, there are a few outside names that have caught my eye.
K Matthew Wright
Browns are going to try to get Cade York back to the practice squad but that may not happen. If not, they’ll need to look elsewhere. Wright was cut by the Panthers and could be a practice squad fit for the Browns. He played in six games last year as a fill-in and made 15-of-18 field goals.
OL Alex Leatherwood
After starting 17 games as a rookie with the Las Vegas Raiders but was waived the following training camp and claimed by the Chicago Bears. He started just four games with the Bears and is now at a career crossroads. If anyone can help the former first-round pick find his footing in the NFL, it could be Cleveland’s offensive line coach Bill Callahan. Due to his contract guarantees, Leatherwood isn’t a player you want to claim. But if he goes unsigned, don’t be surprised if the Browns want to take a look.
QB P.J. Walker
Walker was cut by the Chicago Bears after a not-so-great preseason showing. Nonetheless, Kevin Stefanski said the Browns are for sure bringing a quarterback to the practice squad. Walker had five starts in Carolina last year and can work on the move. Perhaps he is a fit for the Browns.
QB Bailey Zappe

In what was a surprise, the New England Patriots cut Zappe, who started a couple of games for them last season. Cleveland is familar with Zappe because hit lit them up last year for over 300 passing yards and a pair of touchdowns. Perhaps a practice squad candidate if he doesn’t end up in a place like Arizona.
RB Trey Sermon
Some thought that Sermon may end up with the Philadelphia Eagles after a decent preseason. The former Buckeye had 54 yards on just five carries of the football against the Browns a couple of weeks ago. Cleveland may want Hassan Hall or John Kelly Jr. to the practice squad but Sermon is an intriguing outside name.
