The 49ers have a difficult test in Week 1 of the 2023 season, and the Steelers, their Week 1 opponents, just got even stronger. 

Pittsburgh, per NFL Media's Ian Rapoport is set to sign versatile defensive back Desmond King.

King was this week released by the Texans as part of their roster cuts.

Though he was cut by Houston, King's versatility could make him a huge asset to an a Pittsburgh defense that already boasts one of the NFL's most dynamic defensive backs in Minkah Fitzpatrick.

Last season, King played 505 snaps at outside corner but also spent 334 snaps in the slot, per Pro Football Focus. On top of that, King has experience at free safety and in the box.

King showed a knack for making splash players while on a rebuilding Texans team. He had five interceptions over his two seasons in Houston. In 2022, he was constantly in the backfield, recording 10 tackles for loss.

With such little time to acclimate himself to the Pittsburgh defense, it's unlikely he'll be asked to immediately play a substantial role for the Steelers.

But his addition gives the 49ers another chess piece to think about as they game plan for Pittsburgh. 

The last time the 49ers played the Steelers, they prevailed despite committing five turnovers in Week 3 of 2019.

They likely won't be able to afford to squander possession in this road encounter, and San Francisco will need to be ready for the added layer of disguise a player like King can offer the Steelers if Pittsburgh feels comfortable using his varied skill set right off the bat.

It would be a very wise move.
