The 49ers will hope to start the season with a victory over the Steelers, but they lost out in an apparent battle for the services of a rookie on Wednesday.

Pittsburgh, per Matt Barrows of The Athletic, has signed guard Joey Fisher to its practice squad. Fisher, an undrafted free agent out of Shepherd, was waived by the 49ers on cutdown day.

The Niners were said to be keen to sign Fisher to their practice squad after ending his hopes of making the 53-man roster.

Instead, they will see him on the opposite sideline when the 49ers visit Acrisure Stadium in Week 1.

Fisher signing elsewhere follows a frustrating pattern for the 49ers, who have seen practice squad candidates D'Shawn Jamison (Panthers), Ilm Manning and Keith Ismael (Cardinals) claimed by rival teams in the NFC.
