John Lynch hasn't had much respite this week. The 49ers general manager's phone has been buzzing constantly, though not necessarily for the reason you might think.

It's nothing to do with the Nick Bosa contract negotiation. Instead, Lynch has spent much of the week fielding calls from kickers.

“I had no idea there were this many kickers out there," said Lynch in Wednesday's press conference." "I’ve got more texts from people who kicked at one point in their life, pop warner to very accomplished kickers."

Now the texts will finally stop after the 49ers signed Matthew Wright to their practice squad, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Wright, a former kicker for the Steelers, Jaguars and Chiefs, will serve as insurance for rookie Jake Moody in case the third-round pick does not recover from a quad strain in time for the 49ers' Week 1 road game in Pittsburgh. Moody missed the preseason finale with the Chargers because of the injury.

He is 40 for 46 in his career, his career long a 59-yarder in 2022 that at the time was the longest successful field goal in Chiefs franchise history.

But it is Wright's familiarity with kicking in Pittsburgh that likely persuaded the 49ers to sign him as Moody's Week 1 backup.

Moody is said to be recovering well, but the Niners can at least afford to have confidence in his deputy if he is not healthy for a tricky season opener.
