Expectations are high for the upcoming 2023 NFL season. Because the Giants paid quarterback Daniel Jones and traded for Pro Bowl tight end Darren Waller. With another year under the coaching staff, New York is primed to build on last season.
But that's not the way that everybody is looking at the situation in The Big Apple. Instead, the betting model from Austin Mock of The Athletic projects the Giants to fail to meet preseason expectations.
According to the model, the Giants are projected to win just 7.3 games in 2023. That is after a season in which New York just surprised and won 9 games in the regular season.
Naturally, Giants insider Dan Duggan believes that's too low. But if that does end up being accurate, it will mean that the Giants disappointed. It's difficult to argue against that.
It’s surprising that the Giants’ win total is this low. They had a similar projection last year before going 9-6-1 and winning a playoff game. The schedule is undoubtedly tougher this season, and they’re due for some regression, but winning fewer than seven games would be a major disappointment.
Of course, the Giants do have a challenging slate. Right out of the gate, New York will take on the Dallas Cowboys, San Francisco 49ers, Miami Dolphins and Buffalo Bills within the first few weeks of the season alone.
Still, the expectation is that the Giants will take another step forward and potentially challenge the Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC East. A 7-win season would certainly be less than ideal.
Giants’ preseason provided major takeaway for regular season
The New York Giants flashed some offensive success and creativity that should translate to the NFL regular season.
