It's the sad side of the NFL preseason. On Saturday's exhibition game, Miami Dolphins rookie running back Devon Achane was carted off the field in the team's game at Houston. At the time of this writing, there hasn't been any additional information on Achane's injury.
The third-round draft pick is competing for a big role on the Dolphins offense as his unique speed (the guy ran a 4.32 in the 40-yard dash) makes him a home run threat. This is something he teased before suffering an injury this weekend as he broke this 20-yard run:
The Dolphins rookie being carted off is a more significant blow to the team than one would think at first glance. After all, Mike McDaniel has the scheme and running back depth to overcome the injury offensively. But Achane's speed had everyone thinking of him as the primary kickoff returner entering 2023.
Despite being listed as the third-string kickoff returner on the Dolphins' unofficial depth chart, Achane has been the featured player in the preseason. He left Saturday's game versus the Texans as the only player with kickoff returns and was the only one with one in the preseason opener, as well.
The Dolphins need Achane to be healthy to not lose a potential ace returner.
Achane was drafted in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft following an All-SEC season in Texas A&M.
