I’m telling you right now, that Pat— Patrick Mahomes guy is not even real.
Mahomes is one of the only players in the league who has a highlight reel of passes that aren't completed. Incompletions aren't exactly to be celebrated, but this guy is just different. Fans might remember his diving throw against the Buccaneers from Super Bowl LV as one of his coolest incomplete passes, but he just might have one-upped that throw in preseason Week 2 against the Arizona Cardinals.
Things weren't going great for the Kansas City Chiefs offense early in the game. They kept finding themselves behind the stickers due to penalties. Escaping to his right, Mahomes jumped into the air and uncorked a pass on third-and-16 to Marquez Valdes-Scantling as he was heading out of bounds. Valdes-Scantling over-ran the pass slightly, seeing it bounce off his fingertips as he tried to reach back for the grab.
At first, it looked like Mahomes might have run out of bounds, but had Valdes-Scantling caught it, it would have been a completion. You can almost see him slow down a tad and take note of where the sideline was, just so that he had time to make the throw.
The effort was phenomenal from Mahomes to even get this pass off, let alone give his receiver a chance to come down with it. That's what he says it's all about, though. He's just a vessel for giving his receivers a chance to make a play on the ball.
Sure, Valdes-Scantling didn't come down with it this time around, but you never know when this situation could come into play again. The preseason is all about setting the foundation for the regular season.
Hopefully, we'll see this one again and a better result.
