Trey Lance's hopes of salvaging his 49ers career suffered a huge setback when it was reported he had lost the backup job to Sam Darnold, and the man once picked as the future of the franchise was conspicuous by his absence at practice on Wednesday.

According to multiple reports, Lance was not present as the 49ers began practice shortly after it was reported Sam Darnold had won the competition to be the second-string quarterback behind Brock Purdy.

Lance's absence will only fuel talk of an imminent parting between him and the team that selected him third overall in the 2021 draft.

The 49ers are said to be "exploring their options" after making the decision to go with Darnold as QB2 over Lance.

The Niners want insurance at quarterback having used four by the time their 2022 season came to an end in the NFC Championship Game, but they may also want to recoup some value for a quarterback who cost them three first-round picks to acquire.

The problem with that latter desire is the 49ers have precious little leverage in trade negotiations having made it clear they believe both Purdy and Darnold are better options under center.

But if they do succeed in finding a willing trade partner, Brandon Allen will likely make the roster as the Niners' third-stringer. Allen was the third quarterback on the field on Wednesday as the 49ers warmed up for their preseason finale with the Chargers.
