The Denver Broncos are front and center in the national media as it was reported that the San Francisco 49ers are naming Sam Darnold as their backup QB.

With this decision, QB Trey Lance is on the outside looking in. The organization gave up a king's ransom for Lance but it hasn't panned out. Injuries have been the biggest concern but then Brock Purdy stepped up and forced the organization's hand.

With Lance's future in question, many are pointing to the Denver Broncos to swoop in and take him. It's a low-risk high-reward move that could provide the team with a bright future at the position.

We are not saying Lance is like Mahomes, but his ability to throw on the run and evade defenders is very Mahomes-like. This type of player would be a game-changer for any offense and Sean Payton should be taking a look at him.

What's more, Payton desperately wanted Mahomes when he was with the Saints and this move could give him a similar player that he was pounding the table for. Reporters asked Payton about Lance and what he feels about the 49ers QB.

Payton admitted that he isn't focused on that right now. "I'm worried about my own team. I'm not worried about Trey Lance."

I would be shocked if Payton wasn't thinking just a little bit about the dual-threat QB who could immediately come in and compete behind Russell Wilson. Maybe his fingers were crossed under the podium, or maybe he was serious.

Either way, Payton should give the 49ers a call and offer a fifth-round pick to take Lance off their hands. Most likely it would need something much more, but if they just have a QB sitting on the roster who may not see a single snap, toss out a feeler and see what it'll take.

Payton isn't afraid to change things up, bringing in Lance could give the team a huge boost, especially if Wilson struggles yet again.
