The Bears are getting started on their roster cuts ahead of the August 29th deadline.
On Sunday night, it was announced that the team would be parting ways with offensive lineman Alex Leatherwood.
Leatherwood was originally drafted in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the Las Vegas Raiders. Leatherwood struggled mightily as a rookie and was moved to guard from tackle after just one season.
Unfortunately, Leatherwood was not able to impress at guard either, and was released by the Raiders just over a year after being selected in the first round.
The Bears were awarded Leatherwood via waivers and had mostly listed the player as a guard. Leatherwood had performed well in camp this summer, but ended up as the lowest-rated player on the Bears offense in the preseason finale.
Many, including myself, had Leatherwood making the final roster in Chicago for this season. Leatherwood was thought to provide a high-upside depth option on the line for the Bears, but clearly the team was not impressed.
Leatherwood has less than four years of NFL service time, so the 31 other NFL teams will have a chance to claim him on waivers. To keep track of all of the latest cuts made by the Bears, check here.
