The Dallas Cowboys are on to the 2023 NFL season following Tuesday's roster deadline to be at 53 players.
Moves are still going to be mad and the list of players on the team will surely look significantly different by the time gameday comes around. In other words, this is just the "initial" roster with some immediate changes following it.
Even still, it gives us a good idea of what the team's plans are already. Let's dive into the Cowboys roster following the deadline based on the roster cuts reported by DallasCowboys.com's Patrik Walker and Nick Harris.
Quarterback (3)
IN: Dak Prescott, Cooper Rush, Trey Lance
OUT: Will Grier
Although Lance is the talk around town, expect him to be the emergency quarterback of the Cowboys while Rush is firmly positioned as QB2 behind Dak. Patience will be needed there.
Running Back (4)
IN: Tony Pollard, Rico Dowdle, Deuce Vaughn*, Hunter Luepke**
OUT: Ronald Jones, Malik Davis
Luepke played his way into the Cowboys' 53-man roster during the preseason finale where he gained 118 yards from scrimmage.
Wide Receiver (6)
IN: CeeDee Lamb, Michael Gallup, Brandin Cooks, Jalen Tolbert, KaVontae Turpin, Jalen Brooks*
OUT: Simi Fehoko, Dennis Houston, Dontario Drummond, David Durden**, Jalen Moreno-Cropper**, Jose Barbon**. Tyron Johnson
Brooks was far from a roster lock after being selected in the seventh round of the NFL Draft. But his combination of speed and size makes him somebody with upside that can contribute right away on special teams.
Tight End (3)
IN: Jake Ferguson, Luke Schoonmaker*, Peyton Hendershot
OUT: Seth Green, Princeton Fant**, John Stephens** (IR bound), Sean McKeon
McKeon misses the cut to Luepke as the Cowboys' H-back player who will likely have a lot of blocking and pass-catching responsibilities.
Offensive line (8)
IN: Tyron Smith, Tyler Smith, Tyler Biadasz, Zack Martin, Terence Steele, Matt Waletzko, Asim Richards*, T.J. Bass**
OUT: Chuma Edoga (expected to be back in Week 1), Alex Taylor, Brock Hoffman, Earl Bostick**, Josh Ball (IR), Alec Lindstrom, Alex Taylor, Matt Farniok
While the Cowboys' offensive line depth could be better overall, rookies Asim Richards and T.J. Bass put together some very solid preseason which should make the coaching staff feel better about their group of guys.
EDGE rushers (6)
IN: Micah Parsons, DeMarcus Lawrence, Sam Williams, Dorance Armstrong, Dante Fowler, Viliami Fehoko*
OUT: Durrell Johnson**, Tyrus Wheat**, Ben Banogu. Isaiah Land**
This is one of the deepest units on the Cowboys by far. Expect this group of players to spend a lot of time playing inside, too, as Dan Quinn loves to scheme up some fun hybrid defensive fronts.
Defensive tackle (5)
IN: Osa Odighizuwa, Mazi Smith*, Chauncey Golston, Johnathan Hankins, Neville Gallimore
OUT: Isaac Alarcón, Quinton Bohanna
Odighizuwa is truly one of the most underrated Cowboys on the team. Bohanna had to be a tough cut for the coaches after a strong preseason but it's nearly impossible to carry three nose tackles.
Linebacker (3)
IN: Leighton Vander Esch, Damone Clark, Devin Harper
OUT: DeMarvion Overshown* (IR), Malik Jefferson, Jabril Cox
Markquese Bell is also bound to help out here even if his official position is safety. Cox not making it is disappointing as there's a lack of depth at this position.
Cornerback (7)
IN: Trevon Diggs, Stephon Gilmore, DaRon Bland, Jourdan Lewis, Noah Igbinoghene, Eric Scott Jr.*, Nahshon Wright
OUT: C.J. Goodwin (expected back by Week 1) Myles Brooks**, D'Angelo Mandell**, Kelvin Joseph (traded away)
Lewis starting on the 53-man roster is a major deal. After foot surgery last year, the nickel cornerback hasn't practiced all year. The Cowboys clearly believe he'll be ready early in the season as he could've stayed on the PUP list and missed the first four games. Wright is an IR candidate.
Safety (6)
IN: Malik Hooker, Donovan Wilson, Jayron Kearse, Israel Mukuamu, Markquese Bell, Juanyeh Thomas
OUT: Tyler Coyle, Sheldrick Redwine
This is a key unit as the Cowboys will frequently use three-safety looks. Bell is bound to help out at linebacker and Mukuamu also provides CB depth. Carrying six safeties makes sense because they're not only safeties.
Special Teams (2)
IN: Bryan Anger (P), Brandon Aubrey (K)
OUT: Trent Sieg (LS)
Aubrey nailed a 59-yard attempt on Saturday. He's the Cowboys' guy… for now.
