The New York Giants begin preseason action this week versus the Detroit Lions. While not every starter will be in uniform, the game will still have some interesting storylines to track in the lead up to the regular season.
One of the biggest areas that will be put under the microscope is wide receiver. New York added tight end Darren Waller this offseason in hopes of upgrading the talent for Daniel Jones to get the ball to in the passing game.
But the team is still lacking a true bonafide go-to target at receiver. That's where the preseason can help shape the position. The opportunities will be there for a player to emerge in that department.
That's where NFL.com writer Eric Edholm has his focus on for the Giants in week one of the preseason. Edholm wants to see if any of the receivers on the roster is able to step up and separate themselves from the rest of the pack.
GIANTS: I can't imagine Darren Waller will get too much run in Friday's game against the Lions, so let's pivot to highlighting some of the young receivers. This includes third-round speed merchant Jalin Hyatt, of course. He has already said he wants to be Offensive Rookie of the Year, so the confidence part comes pretty naturally.
But it's not just Hyatt we'll be watching. Collin Johnson has been around a few years and clearly has talent. Bryce Ford-Wheaton is another interesting rookie. It doesn't seem like Wan'Dale Robinson (torn ACL last November) is going to play, but the Giants have a lot of sorting out to do in the receiving corps.
The Giants made a lot of noise last season and surprised many by making a run to the playoffs. Having a legitimate weapon step up on the outside would go a long way in New York continuing on that same trajectory this upcoming season.
