The Cleveland Browns are adding to their backfield after hosting several running backs for tryouts on Friday.
According to KPRC2 NFL reporter Aaron Wilson, the Browns are set to sign former Indianapolis Colts RB Jordan Wilkins. A former fifth-round pick out of Ole Miss by the Indianapolis Colts in 2018, Wilkins is entering his sixth NFL season. The 6-foot-1 and 216-pound halfback spent the first four years of his career with the Colts, appearing in 49 games for the AFC South squad. In that span, the 29-year-old carried the ball 195 times for 951 yards and four touchdowns. He added 35 catches for 233 yards as a receiver.
Wilkins has since spent time with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Tennessee Titans on each practice squad. He most recently returned to the Colts in 2022, where he appeared in four games, notching 13 carries for 58 yards and six catches for 29 yards.
The move to add to the backfield comes after Browns second-year RB Jerome Ford suffered a significant hamstring injury, putting his Week 1 status in doubt. In the team's recent preseason tilt with the Commanders, several running backs failed to run away with the opportunity presented to them. Demetric Felton was the best of the lot, averaging just 3.9 yards per carry with eight attempts.
Wilkins will add another option to compete for carries behind Nick Chubb, reinforcing the team's depth this preseason with a veteran who knows how to play a complementary role.
