The Detroit Lions were forced to make some roster changes this week after offensive lineman Ross Piersbacher got hurt in the Lions preseason game against the Giants. The team went out and signed one of the XFL's best offensive lineman to help out.
Alex Mollette is still pretty young and is trying to figure things out in the NFL. He went undrafted, but got a invited to camp with the Seahawks after a decent college career at Marshall. Things didn't work out there. He went to training camp with the Colts after that, but he wound up getting waived.
He found himself with the Houston Roughnecks of the XFL and had a big season. He was named to the leagues All-XFL team as the best center in the league. The Lions gave him a tryout over the weekend and he showed enough to get signed.
Mollette might have a shot to make the Lions since the depth of their offensive line looked a little weak in the first preseason game. Mollette's ability to play both guard and center is similar to Evan Brown's, who the Lions lost to the Seahawks in free agency. We'll see what he can do very soon.
