An opportunity that isn’t expected to come again for a long time awaits a Cleveland Browns rookie on Thursday.

Against the Philadelphia Eagles in the third preseason game, QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson is going to start.

Head coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed the news on Tuesday during his press conference.

This will be the first start for the rookie from UCLA this preseason. In each of the first two preseason games he’s played great but was the second and third quarterback to enter for the Browns in those contests.

On Thursday neither team is expected to play any of their starters. But going against second-string players and quality depth on a Super Bowl-contending team will be beneficial for the young quarterback. In the prior two games, DTR had been working against third-string players and potential practice squad candidates of the New York Jets and Washington Commanders.

Barring something devastating happen, the Browns don’t plan for Thompson-Robinson to touch the field in 2023. As of right now, Joshua Dobbs is the backup to the franchise quarterback Deshaun Watson.

The future of DTR in this league is a cloudy one if he makes it to become a starting-level quarterback. As long as Watson is the guy here long-term, which all signs point toward, then DTR could be a trade chip down the road. That is all of course hypothetically speaking.

Against the Jets, the rookie went 8-of-11 for 82 yards and a touchdown. In both games combined, DTR has run the ball 11 times for 47 yards. In the recent matchup with the Commanders, he was 9-of-10 passing with a touchdown.

Kellen Mond is expected to play on Thursday too, as Watson and Dobbs will not. This means that DTR is going to get at least a half of football against a well-rounded franchise.
