The Baltimore Ravens are starting a new era offensively in 2023 with offensive coordinator Todd Monken, who coached at Georgia the previous three seasons. Unfortunately, one of his key weapons isn't at training camp.
It's been well documented by now that Ravens' running back J.K. Dobbins isn't satisfied with his current pay on the final year of his rookie deal. Despite him being on the PUP list, his contract is the main reason why he's been absent.
Ravens head coach John Harbaugh mentioned earlier in the week that he spoke with Dobbins and that he doesn't know when he'll make an appearance at practice. Monken had something similar to say on Thursday when he was asked about him as well.
“I talk to him every day," said Monken. "I talk to him every day. I don’t know. He has a big smile on his face. I don’t know what else to say. He’s here every day, so when he’s out there, we’ll be fired up he’s out there.”
This time away from the team for Dobbins has allowed guys like Melvin Gordon and Gus Edwards to get more work. However, Dobbins is missing valuable time when it comes to chemistry and getting a rhythm before the season starts.
Monken was asked how far behind Dobbins is seeing as he hasn't been on the field. His answer was intriguing but made a ton of sense.
“Great question because he hasn’t repped, so it’s hard for me to know that when he’s not out there," Monken said. "It’s just the way it is. He’s not out there, so we’ll find out when he does get out there, but we’re excited. I know I was kind of being a smart alec there, but I’m just saying in general, when he gets out there, we’ll be excited to have him.”
Dobbins has had a problem staying healthy during his career, but he's also very productive when he is. That's what he and the Ravens will have to find a middle ground on when it comes to a potential new deal at some point.
