Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes made a comment on Wednesday at training camp that every NFL fan — specifically Chiefs fans — should hear.
Mahomes was asked by a reporter on Wednesday how he makes sure the team keeps its edge.
The superstar quarterback referenced tight end Travis Kelce punching Jack Cochrane in training camp last weekend as not the proper way for the Chiefs to keep their edge, but Mahomes admitted that some arguing on the field isn't a bad thing.
"We have a lot of guys out here that are super competitive," explained Mahomes. "But as far as just doing it the right way — I mean Trav punching the guy not necessarily the way you want to do it — but you love the fire. You love the fire on both sides of the ball. Trying to finish to the last second. But I mean, that's just the kind of guys we got. We're gonna compete. We're gonna argue out there on the football field and we're gonna love each other in the locker room — because we got a lot of dudes that are super competitive on this team."
Fights and on-field scuffles are going to happen during training camp. They're going to happen during regular season practices. And they're even going to happen during regular season games. It's just part of being a competitor. That doesn't mean it's ideal, but it's not always a sign of dysfunction, either. In fact, that fiery competitiveness can be a sign that a team is hungry for greatness (which is certainly true in the Chiefs' case).
So if there are more fights before the season starts, don't stress over it. Don't sit there and wonder if there are problems in the Chiefs' locker room. Instead, just go back to Mahomes' words — they're a great reminder that football is a passionate sport.
