For players around the NFL hoping to make a 53-man roster, preseason games may as well be the Super Bowl.
Players on roster bubbles get three chances (if they’re lucky) to prove themselves in a game before cut day. Every game and every snap matters.
But who stands to gain (or lose) the most from preseason performances? Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel mentioned tackling as something he specifically looks for in preseason games. That means defensive players and players at skill positions who evade tackles have a lot at to prove.
"I think defensively you've got to be able to tackle," said Vrabel when asked by Titans media if there were specific positions that were evaluated more during preseason games. "I think that's certainly where you see where some of the skill players maybe can do something with the football. See who can break some tackles. I think running backs are critical, to be able to take that contact and take hits and take care of the football. So, skill players."
"They're all important, but I think the tackling is really where we'll see guys come down and tackle and get off blocks and stay on their feet," Vrabel said.
You can always see which players can cover, get open, or make throws in training camp practices, but you can never really tell who can tackle or break tackles until there's an opponent on the other sideline.
The Titans have some interesting position battles at wide receiver, running back, defensive back, and linebacker that will be largely influenced by who stands out in the games over the next three weeks.
Keep that in mind when you turn on the Titans' preseason matchup with the Chicago Bears this weekend. If a player is flying to the football and making a nice open-field tackle, Vrabel is taking notice.
