The Detroit Lions did a little roster shuffling on Wednesday before day two of joint practices with the New York Giants got going. The Lions signed running back Devine Ozigbo and waived wide receiver Avery Davis.
You might remember Ozigbo from his days at Nebraska. He had a big senior year in 2018 when he ran for 1,082 yards and 12 touchdowns. He would go undrafted though. Since then, he's had stints with Saints, Jaguars, Patriots and Broncos.
The most notable among those stints was in 2019 when he was with the Saints. Lions Head Coach Dan Campbell was the Saints Assistant Head Coach at the time. He must have seen something in Ozigbo that made him want to take a second look.
Ozigbo has struggled to find the field in the NFL. He's suited up for 25 regular season games in his career, but he's only ran the ball 14 times for 29 yards.
He'll have hard time finding a spot in Detroit since their backfield is pretty well situated at this point with David Montgomery, Jahmyr Gibbs and Justin Jackson. He could fight for fourth spot with Craig Reynolds, Mohamed Ibrahim and Jermar Jefferson though.
More than likely, Ozigbo is here to get some preseason tape out there for wherever it is that he winds up next.
