Buccaneers GM Jason Licht has high praise for QB Kyle Trask

Jason Licht didn’t keep his cards close to his vest when asked about Kyle Trask and the Buccaneers.

There are certainly better players on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but there might not be a more important player for the team in 2023 and beyond than Kyle Trask.

It might be ironic that such a polarizing player has stepped into this pivotal role for the team again after the team has finally seemed to forget about the tumult of Jameis Winston, but here we are.

After two years of seeing very little on the field and a questionable draft process, Kyle Trask is the only quarterback currently on the Buccaneers, and right now it seems like he could be the favorite amongst the front office if their words are to be believed.

Jason Licht didn't hide his feelings on the young quarterback either. He had this to say about Trask when asked at the Combine:

"Yeah, we’re very excited about Kyle," said Licht. "We’re very excited about him getting the opportunity to be the starter – we’d be very comfortable with that. [We’re] excited – I’ve used that word already but I really am – for him to get a chance to be with the starters in offseason, starters in training camp, starters in preseason, which he’s never done.

"He was a successful quarterback in the SEC – I mean, wildly successful. We took him in the second round for a reason – we didn’t take him in the second round just to be a third-string quarterback. Now, it has yet to be seen what he turns out to be, but we’re confident that it’s going to be very good.”

While this all could just be GM-speak about a guy hasn't panned out yet, Licht could've given a bevy of different answers if he wanted to deflect and not give everything away.

Instead of giving the normal response that contains words that don't actually mean anything, Licht gave several great reasons as to why he and the staff are right to be confident in what Kyle Trask brings to the table in 2023, and comments like this might be enough to even convince the cynics that this staff likes what they see.

Whether that player ever shows up remains to be seen for now, but the Buccaneers have been very consistent in their ability to show support for their only quarterback on the roster without it seeming like that is the only reason why they say it in the first place and that says a lot.

Licht and company had just better hope that they are putting their faith in the right player. There is a lot riding on this decision for more than one person, player, and coach.
