The Denver Broncos made quite a few additions to their roster this off-season via free agency – some more important than others. But, the Broncos felt every move they made was one that needed to be made.
The Broncos needed a backup quarterback, and they got that by signing Jarrett Stidham. Last year's situation wasn’t good. When Russell Wilson was hurt and Brett Rypien played, it wasn’t good. Heck, even when Wilson played it wasn’t good.
Bringing in Stidham will guarantee that you will get good backup quarterback play when you need it. No, he won’t play at a Pro Bowl or All-Pro level, but he will be one of the better backups in the league.
"Trying to keep enhancing my game, be multiple different things that, you know, that we do and, you know, getting with the mastermind, like Coach Payton is kind of what I wanted," Stidham said during an introductory interview. "So it worked out great and happy to be here."
After a season like the one the Broncos just had last season, why would anyone want to come to play for this team? I mean really, it is a reasonable question to ask. For Stidham, it has nothing to do with anything from last season.
"You know, different reasons, obviously," Stidham started. "I think the main thing was, coach Payton obviously being a huge fan of him and, you know, his time in New Orleans from whenever I was a little kid and whenever he was, you know, coaching Drew Brees throughout the years. So, really, that was probably the main reason for just getting to play under him and getting to work with him every day."
Bringing in Payton wasn't just to help the team get better with their play on the field, although that is easily the biggest reason. But it is also because he recruits, almost as if it's college. Guys want to play for him.
Guys want to play for Payton so badly that they are fired up, even after that atrocious 2022 season they just had.
"We're fired up just the history behind this place, obviously, great new ownership, great new head coach," Stidham explained. "Just things are going in the right direction here and excited to be a part of it."
The Broncos now have their backup to Russell Wilson, and he couldn't be more excited.
