Bears reportedly have interest in signing one of the top remaining free agents
The Chicago Bears are one of the teams “in the mix” for one of the NFL’s top remaining free agents
The Chicago Bears said goodbye to running back David Montgomery on Tuesday evening.
According to multiple reports, Montgomery, who spent the first four years of his career in Chicago, agreed to a three-year deal with the Detroit Lions.
The Bears are in the market for a running back now that Montgomery is off to Detroit.
(Note: Chicago added some running back depth on Tuesday evening by agreeing to a two-year deal with Travis Homer.)
According to reporter Ty Dunne, the Bears are one of several teams in the mix to sign Jamaal Williams, who isn't expected to return to Detroit after the Montgomery signing.
Williams is two years older than Montgomery, but he's coming off the best season of his career. The former BYU standout rushed for a career-high 1,066 yards in 2022. He also led the NFL in rushing touchdowns with 17.
Signing Williams would give the Bears a suitable replacement for Montgomery while also bringing a big personality into the locker room. Williams is one of the most popular players in the NFL thanks to his unique interviews that often go viral. He's also a tremendous teammate.
This could be a solid move for the Bears as long as Williams isn't looking for an unreasonable contract. The leadership he'd bring, plus his locker room presence in general, could be exactly what's needed in Chicago.
