Buccaneers RB Rachaad White isn't worried about Bijan Robinson
No team ever wants a player that is afraid of a little competition.
Mentality is a huge part of what makes players great in the NFL. It may not be everything, but how guys carry themselves through various trials and moments says a lot about who they are as people and as athletes.
Players can either rise to the moment or shrink from it. Buccaneers running back Rachaad White is choosing to rise to a moment that hasn't even happened yet.
As fans across the NFL turn their attention to the 2023 NFL Draft, one name that has been tied to the Buccaneers at an interesting rate is Texas running back Bijan Robinson.
Robinson is the consensus top back in the class and makes plenty of sense for a Buccaneers team that has to get better on the ground in 2023, but a move like this could upset the hierarchy in the Tampa backfield that is currently led by Rachaad White.
While the only goal for the Buccaneers is to get better in an area they struggled in during the 2022 season, the goal for the players is to keep their jobs. White isn't worried about the pressure that a move like this would bring.
In a quote that is basically daring the Bucs to spend a pick on the position, White has made it very clear that he isn't worried about losing his job to a rookie.
The confidence is infectious. This is also the exact type of attitude that a player needs to find success in the NFL.
Competition isn't a bad thing. Pressure makes diamonds, and Rachaad White is showing that he isn't worried about any external pressure from the Bucs. The job is his and he isn't going to give it up.
Whether this could actually happen is still up for debate.
The Buccaneers would be a little crazy to draft a running back based on their many other needs, but it would also track that Todd Bowles values fixing the run game above all else.
Robinson is one of the best running back prospects of the past few years and has measurable traits and the game film to back that up. This is the type of guy that joins a team and immediately makes a difference.
Regardless of what the Buccaneers decide to do or how any competitions play out in training camp, this is an awesome mentality for such a young player to put on display.
There wasn't a lot to love about the Buccaneers last season, but Rachaad White stepping up to the plate in some big moments was one of them.
It looks like there will be a lot more of those moments in 2023, even if the Buccaneers spend a valuable pick on the position.
