The Las Vegas Raiders had a great draft but one CBS Sports analyst thinks their pick may have hurt one Raiders star player.
To me, this draft class is one of the best ones they have had in quite some time, and we haven't even seen them play a snap yet. But, we don't need to, honestly. I mean, think of all the failed first-rounders we have seen this team have just over the last five years or so. They have drafted more busts than any team it feels like.
But, with their first pick, they took Tyree Wilson, the edge rusher out of Texas Tech. He will be the guy to replace Chandler Jones next year, or even this year depending on how good he is and how bad Jones is. Last year Jones was bad, so this pick certainly doesn't help his chances. In fact, one CBS Sports analyst thinks this pick hurts Jones badly.
Jones was one of the biggest free-agent disappointments last season, not having the impact the Las Vegas Raiders hoped when they signed him. While Jones had 47 pressures and a 10.6% pressure rate (the same amount as 2021), the sack total dipped from 10.5 to 4.5. Jones didn't have a game with a full sack until Week 13; not good, considering Maxx Crosby played on the opposite edge. The Raiders drafted Tyree Wilson at No. 7 overall, who is expected to be an immediate contributor to the pass rush. Whether Wilson or Jones will get the majority of snaps will be determined in training camp, but top-10 picks are expected to be instant impact players. Wilson is going to get snaps in his rookie season. Jones is still a good pass rusher at age 33 but will need to earn his snaps going forward. He can still play a significant amount of snaps if he's productive on the field. –Jeff Kerr, CBS Sports
The Raiders know what they are doing, and after the terrible season Jones had last year, I think this draft pick was specifically to prepare themselves for Jones' falloff. So, yeah, this pick hurts him.
They now have a guy who is younger, cheaper, and could possibly produce the same if not better. Why would they not do that when their defense needs so much help? This pick hurts Jones a ton, but, this is a business. Jones is getting up there in age and they won't stick by him forever, especially if his game isn't at the level they need it to be.
Tyree Wilson is the future of this team, and sadly, Jones is not.
