The Houston Texans have announced the "moment you've all been waiting for" on social media by revealing the jersey numbers of their 2023 NFL Draft class.
That includes the jersey number of the new face of the franchise, quarterback C.J. Stroud. The rookie signal-caller's attire won't change much from his collegiate days at Ohio State as he'll continue to wear No. 7.
By the way, a shoutout to kicker Ka'imi Fairbairn is in order. He was the owner of the jersey number before Stroud's arrival. It's certainly meaningful that he's leaving it alone for Stroud. It's the right decision that shows respect to Stroud who, rookie or not, aims to become the leader of the Texans moving forward.
But the announcement of the jersey number has a much deeper meaning behind it. The Texans quarterback is no stranger to the jersey number as he wore it since his high school days. However, the significance of No. 7 has only grown for Stroud in recent years. After the passing of former Ohio State QB Dwayne Haskins, it's been a way to honor the man who he's described as a "big brother" in the past.
"I’ve tried to honor him this year as much as I could because that’s something I try to take seriously is trying to hold up the people who passed away the past few years,” Stroud said last year.
In terms of Texans history, Stroud will join an unremarkable group of quarterbacks to wear No. 7 for the franchise: Brian Hoyer, Case Keenum, and Dan Orlovsky.
