The Lions are expecting more of the same in 2023 as all five starters from last year return, with one more year of experience. However, if there is one area of weakness, it would be depth.
Well, that depth got slightly better with the Lions' latest signing.
Per NFL insider Tom Pelissero, the Lions have reached a deal with veteran offensive lineman Germain Ifedi.
Ifedi was originally selected by the Seattle Seahawks in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft. Ifedi spent four seasons with the Seahawks, producing mixed results, before signing with the Chicago Bears for the 2020 season.
Ifedi would also spend 2021 with the Bears before signing with the Atlanta Falcons for 2022. Ifedi played sparingly in Atlanta last season and now has a new home in Detroit.
Ifedi has spent time at guard and tackle in his career. The former Texas A&M Aggie has been more effective as a guard, with his best season coming in 2020 for the Bears. During that season, Ifedi primarily played right guard and ended the season with a 65.0 PFF grade.
Based off of the current Lions' roster, Ifedi will likely slot in as a backup tackle. The team has better depth on the interior with rookie Colby Sorsdal, Graham Glasgow, and 2022 fourth-round pick Logan Stenberg.
Ifedi presents a solid veteran option with plenty of starting experience behind Taylor Decker and Penei Sewell. While Ifedi has struggled as a starting tackle, he could still be a useful insurance policy.
Financial details have not been released, but the deal is almost certainly for one year.
