The Dallas Cowboys made some notable moves this offseason to bolster the pass catchers for Dak Prescott. Dallas traded for veteran Pro Bowl wideout Brandin Cooks, the headlining acquisition for the offense.
Dallas also allowed tight end Dalton Schultz to walk in free agency, as he signed with the Houston Texans. Then, the Cowboys selected Michigan tight end Luke Schoonmaker in the second-round of the 2023 NFL Draft.
But the Cowboys may not be done in exploring ways to bolster the group that Prescott will be tasked to get the ball to. During the early stages of OTAs, KaVontae Turpin has been getting some more work in with the receivers.
Turpin has carved out a role and made a name for himself by returning kicks. He is an electric talent with game-breaking speed. Turpin showcased some of that during his first season with the Cowboys.
Dallas experimented a little bit with Turpin on offense a little bit last year. But it was hardly anything substantial. He totaled four touches for 26 yards from scrimmage in 2022, including three rushes for 17 yards.
Mike McCarthy and offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer will have their fingerprints all over the offense next season. And it appears that the two will experiment with the idea of utilizing Turpin on offense more.
As mentioned, Turpin has electric speed and is always the fastest player on the field. That kind of speed would have the chance to open up even more for the offense. Getting the ball in his hands seems to be a smart strategy.
Obviously, the Cowboys won't apply everything that they do in practices this offseason to the regular season. But this is a development worth paying attention to, largely due to the changes made at offensive coordinator.
