Last year was tough for not only the Denver Broncos, but their star quarterback who found a change of scenery to be worse than what we all thought.
Wilson wanted out of Seattle because he didn't like the way things were going. He wanted to be used and showcased the way all quarterbacks want to be used. He wanted to cook.
He then got traded to Denver, as we all know, and Nathaniel Hackett let him cook. So we thought. It was by far his worst year, and it was the Broncos' worst season since maybe 2010 when Josh McDaniels was on his last leg.
This offseason they went and got Sean Payton and fixed some of the issues they had last year, on paper at least. They fixed the offensive line by signing some big named free agents. So, hopefully, this year we see Wilson get things back on track.
Last year we heard things about Wilson that the players and coaches said just weren't true. It seemed every week there was a new rumor about him. Well, on Thursday, one of his new teammates had a very powerful message when talking about Wilson.
"Well, like you said, for the longest time, I really couldn't stand Russell [Wilson] because of how many times he beat us," right tackle Mike McGlinchey told the media. "But to be in the locker room with him and to share and to be able to be in the huddle with him now has been awesome. I think Russ is first and foremost, he's a workhorse. There's nobody in the building that works harder than him.
"He's addicted to this game and is addicted to trying to be great. And that rubs off on a lot of people. And there's a reason that he's had this success in this league that he's had. And I'm excited for what we can all do together. Because I think with coach, with us, with the talent that we have on this team, I think we have a really good shot to help us get to even higher heights than he's been."
The Broncos still have faith in Wilson, and maybe last year was just an anomaly. Wilson had never played that badly. But last season he played through quite a bit of injury, he had the worst offensive line in the league that allowed 61 sacks, 55 to him, which was the worst in the league.
It also seemed like some pretty important players around him started getting injured too. Javonte Williams, the starting running back, ended up tearing some ligaments in his leg, ending his season. Of course, Crockett and Tim Patrick also had their season end before the season, and left tackle Garett Bolles had a season-ending injury as well.
The coaching was terrible for the Broncos, especially on the offensive side of the ball. They finished with the worst points-per-game average in the league, and a lot of that was because of rookie head coach Nathaniel Hackett.
I think what McGlinchey said rings true to some of the stuff we see in the offseason. He wants to get this team back on track. he wants to get back to the Super Bowl, and we see and hear that in his work. The fact that he has never played with McGlinchey and his new right tackle is already saying that means something.
