The talented head coach has been breaking records left and right while turning around the franchise almost immediately upon his arrival. While some fans are calling for his head, he's a crucial part of the team's success.
The head coach knows all about the city known for being good neighbors and the generosity that pours out of the Bills Mafia. Recently, McDermott got a whole new look at who the Bills Mafia really is.
A simple canceled flight turned into a life-changing moment for one lucky Bills fan.
Jason Guenther explained on social media how a flight cancellation turned into a 3+ hour drive with the Buffalo Bills head coach. With Guenther and McDermott both stranded in Atlanta, trying to get to Buffalo, they agreed to team up, fly to Pittsburgh, and then make the several-hour drive together back home. McDermott had been in Atlanta to watch his daughter's softball tournament and was just trying to get home, like Guenther.
What's more, after the ride had ended and Guenther was dropped off at home, the man offered to split the fare with McDermott, who declined. While it's just a small act, it just shows what kind of man McDermott is. The kind-hearted (often clapping) man has been a staple in the community since his arrival. Hopping in the car with a Bills fan to drive a few hours to get home is just another way in which McDermott stands out from the rest.
Guenther talked with the Buffalo News on his journey after posting a now-viral message on Facebook, detailing the journey.
Today was a day I’ll never forget, flying back from North Carolina to Buffalo, my layover flight from Atlanta Georgia to Buffalo was canceled…with nothing else available, it was looking like i was spending the night in Georgia. However, I ran into Sean McDermott, who is the head coach of the Buffalo Bills. I had met him a few times before, so we started talking. He was in Atlanta with his daughter Maddie, for her softball showcase. Since our flight was canceled and both of us just wanted to get home…we decided to book a flight from Atlanta to Pittsburgh, rent a car and then drive from Pittsburgh to Buffalo. I’ll never forget that 3 plus hour drive. I knew Sean was a great coach, but tonight proved it, he’s a regular guy who has an amazing take on coaching and comes to find out we share all the same philosophys. He said that I have a great mindset and at such a young age already have a great understanding for coaching. Still in disbelief. Wow just wow…unreal, everything happens for a reason….thankful and blessed..humbled and hungry. He loved my saying… Never forget where you came from but never let people tell you where you can go in life…
The city of good neighbors shows up, once again.
